Keynote Address
The Art and Practice of Conscious Leadership

Dr. Lance Secretan

Keynote Address Chair:
  Sue Carruthers, FAHP,
BC Children's Hospital Foundation
Keynote speaker:
  Dr. Lance Secretan

Six thousand years ago we were one-we shared the same stories and myths, mysteries and magic. The classical Greek philosophers began the process of separate thinking. The great Renaissance thinkers picked up the pace and the genius of our modern scientific and technical era has unraveled this precious human asset. If we continue to separate ourselves-liberal/conservative, parent/ child, Muslim/Christian, labor/management, black/white, young/old, rich/poor-we will wither as a society, perhaps as a species.

Conscious Leadership inspires self and others to reframe what we see by making the connections between all the parts-countries as kin, corporations as communities, employees as whole humans, religions as partners rather than competitors. In this knowing, we gain a greater understanding of how all our actions touch and connect with everything else.

Lance Secretan, one of the world's foremost strategists and leadership advisors, brings passion and courage to his cause-to change the world by reawakening spirit and values in the workplace. Lance's brilliance as a teacher and storyteller is showcased in his work as an electrifying and unique thought-leader, public speaker, "coaches' coach", and bestselling author. In his breakthrough work on leadership and inspiration, Lance has the uncanny ability to foretell, discern, and translate concepts while holding the mega-view.

Following his keynote address, Lance and his colleague Sarah Grimmer will conduct a full-day (space limited) workshop for those delegates who register for the Leadership Forum.

Sunday 6/18, 5:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. —and beyond!

Lunch Presentation
Building Teams - One Beat at a Time!

Lunch Chairs:
  Nick Locke, BC Cancer Foundation
Jim O'Hara, CFRE, VGH & UBC Hospitals Foundation

Presented by The Drum Café, this innovative and inspiring lunch will demonstrate the importance of working as a team, playing to the same beat and how individual roles and rhythms, large or small, impact the entire enterprise.

As in an orchestra, your organization is made up of different departments and you often raise funds for large health care organizations that have a very different way of operating from you. Different rhythms playing to their own beat. By playing to the same beat, regardless of the rhythm, you can focus on a common goal, vision or mission. And by listening, your organization can learn to communicate more effectively. By making music as a group, you will discover that the whole is greater than the sum of all its individual parts, and working together can be fun, productive and inspirational.

" Your group is fantastic, the style marvelous, the cohesiveness you bring to any group of people is extraordinary and the joy and exhilaration we experienced unsurpassed. "

This year's banquet features a brand new format of AHP awards and a return of the prestigious Hygeia awards presented for excellence in health care public relations.
