Strategic Planning: Your Foundation's Foundation

Gillian Morrison, BA, MPA, Vice President, KCI (Ketchum Canada Inc.)
Michael Logue, Senior Vice President, KCI (Ketchum Canada Inc.)

The current environment for health care fundraising is turbulent. Marked by uncertainties about funding and public policy, ever-higher revenue expectations are being placed on hospital foundations. Careful strategic planning is required to position a foundation to achieve success. However to create an effective plan, an organization needs to be ready. This session will explore key critical steps for health care foundations preparing for a new strategic plan and examine the analysis that underpins a strong plan.

Monday 6/19 | 1:30 — 2:45 p.m.

Benchmarking and Financial Modeling

William McGinly, PhD, CAE, President and CEO,
Association for Healthcare Philanthropy

Knut Nordlie, BA, CMA, CFRE, Vice President and COO,
BC Children's Hospital Foundation

It is very important for all non-profits to avoid the trap of becoming too inward in how they assess performance. Partnering with others is often the key to success but how can this be done without jeopardizing your market edge?

One way to maximize your program is to benchmark with the best. But who are they and how well are they doing? Unless you're comparing apples to apples, you will never know. Discover what measurements are available, what is important to know; and how philanthropy can become an integral part of the strategic planning and budgeting process within your health care organization.

Monday 6/19 | 3:15 — 4:30 p.m.

Measuring and Evaluating Fundraising Performance

Vivian Smith, CFRE, Principal, Liberty Quest Enterprises
Ross Marsh, Principal, Ross Marsh and Associates

Board-staff conflict and/or CEO-director of development conflict are very often the result of unclear or unrealistic expectations on the part of one or both sides. Effective development starts with understanding and understanding starts with knowledge. By the end of this session, participants will:

  • have a clear understanding of how to choose and use the performance metrics that are most relevant to their organization;
  • be able to communicate more effectively with organizational decision-makers;
  • be much more "on top of" their organizations; and
  • be more effective and efficient at raising money.

Tuesday 6/20 | 9:00 — 10:15 a.m.

Director's and Officer's Liability: The Essentials and Beyond

Terrance Carter, LL.B, Partner, Carter & Associates
Edgar Frechette, LL.B, Partner, Fasken Martineau

As a result of statutory and common law developments, directors and officers of charitable and not-for-profit corporations are more exposed to personal liability for their own actions or inactions, as well as joint and several liability with other members of the board of directors for errors that may occur in the operation of their organizations. This comprehensive seminar will provide an overview of the extent of liability being and the steps that can be taken to reduce their exposure to liability.

Tuesday 6/20 | 10:45 a.m. — 12:00 p.m.

Succession Planning for Your Staff — Do or Die

Barb Millar, Director of Administration,
St. Joseph's Health Centre Foundation

This session will emphasize simple strategies and tangible tactics for "retaining" your premier players. "Integrated" succession plans will strengthen the fabric of your team. Fundraising success is predicated on building a dynamic team. But given the competition for talent, good fundraising professionals at all levels are at a premium and are prone to "moving on." How do you hold on to high-performing staff? Do you have succession plans that will stack the cards in your favour?

Tuesday 6/20 | 2:00 — 3:15 p.m.

Income Trusts

Ann Jackson, CFA, MBA, Vice President,
Phillips, Hager & North Investment Management Ltd.

The purpose of this session is to introduce newer investment vehicles, — to explore what income trusts are, — how they could be used in an investment portfolio and to discuss if they are appropriate investment vehicles for charities. Are they an appropriate investment for a charitable investment portfolio? During this session, we will define income trusts and discuss whether and how they should be addressed in your organization's investment policy statements.

Tuesday 6/20 | 3:45 — 5:00 p.m.
