  This guide is intended as a first step in assisting your organization to prepare for how privacy legislation will affect your fundraising practices. The full application of the federal privacy legislation, the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act, comes into effect on January 1, 2004. Therefore the time to get prepared is now. This guide was prepared by a cross-sector working group representing the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP), the Association for Healthcare Philanthropy (AHP), the Association of Professional Researchers for Advancement (APRA) and the Canadian Centre for Philanthropy (CCP) with assistance from the Hospital for Sick Children Foundation and University Health Network. This guide is not intended and should not be construed as either comprehensive in nature nor as legal advice. However it does provide the framework and practical examples of what your organization should be doing to ensure compliance.
